Behavioral aspects of the dogs....

When the dogs are in John Thornton's camp, why, in your opinion, do the dogs besides Buck give in to Hal's whipping and pull the sled?

  1. Buck hardened himself more than the other dogs so maybe it didn´t hurt Buck as much as the others, so he stayed in his position. The other dogs couldn´t bear the pain and maybe also were not as tired as Buck. His tiredness might also have dazed him, becuase in the book it says that Buck only felt the club hitting him in the ´background´. And when the man doesn´t stop hitting Buck, he later only hears the sound of the club banging on him.
Buck might also have thought that he is the leader because at that time the 2 men and the woman where the drivers, and they were chaotic and very unexperianced. So Buck did not respect them because they didn´t act like leaders.
So pretty much Buck ignored the club because of his tiredness.

  2. Buck and the other dogs were so tired, not only because of the toil this family group has put them through, but also because they didn't even rest enough before, when he was sold to this un-experienced group. The dogs are made of stone physically, but not emotionally. Whip after whip, one-by-one they all stood up, because I believe that they were hurting and just had the attitude of just wanting to get it over with. Buck, however, didn't get up, even after he was whipped. His mind was somewhere else, as in the book I quote,"He only felt the club hitting him in the background." He set his mind to do something and he did it. He didn't move, but the other dogs did, because they were most probably tired of the pain they were going through.

  3. Buck was extremely tired when he arrived at John Thornton's camp. He ignored the men whipping was because I think that the tiredness was one reason, and that he decided to not to listen to him because all the way till now, he was listening to the men and leading the dogs as a leader. So, I think he wanted to fawn on a little bit. I also think that he wanted to show that Buck was not low as the 2 men would think he was. He wanted to show a little bit of importance of him. He also thought that he wanted to rest since they stopped where it seemed to be a resting stop with one person(John). The other dogs had the feeling that they had to move on since they have the feeling that the master is way greater than them, and if they don't move, the master is going to whip them more with the club. Buck didin't think about the masters as much as the other dogs because the 2 men wasn't treating Buck in a polite way and instead in a inappropriate way.

  4. since Buck and the dogs have traveled so long with only two nights rest. When they reached at John Thornton's camp they were so tired and exhausted and when they were sold they were forced to move a ton of plates tents food etc. and buck tried to show how strong he is and he was being whipped for being strong and extremely tired in the exact same time.

  5. Yes, the dogs beside buck gave in. Those dogs ether got shot or killed. The other dogs just carried on in the fear of getting shot. When they reached John Thornthon’s camp they were perambulating skeletons. “ The dogs dropped down as though they had all been struck dead”. Buck also gave in for two reasons one he was so tired, drained, footsore, worn out .Two they were going to cross a flimsy and fragile ice river that was going to break.

  6. Is true that the other dogs continue, but it wasn't because they werent tired or because they had energy, they were starving and they couldn't walk much more, but their fear of dying was stronger than that. Unlike Buck who couldn't go any longer without a rest.
I think he thought that continuing was pointless as all of them were almost "dead", and I also think that he trusted John Thornton and believed that he wasn't going to let him die.
He did that right thing as John Thornton saved him and all the others died on their way

  7. Buck was used to pain in harsh conditions so he didn't mind being beaten. The other dogs didn't want to suffer the same fate as the dogs who gave up suffered. Buck on the other hand sensed something about John Thornton. He wanted to let hime know that death was in the air and wanted John to save and care for him. The other dogs were probably not so enthusiastic about being beaten so they didn't give up.

  8. All the dogs including Buck were extremely exhausted that they couldn't even move when they stopped at the John Thornton's camp since they spent/used all their energy due to the long journey to Dawson city. Even the masters (Hal, Charles, Mercedes) were tired as their dogs. But when the dogs stopped at the camp, Hal just whips to the dogs to make them pull the sled without understanding their tiredness and their limited energy to move. But Buck who was the leader of the sled didn't even mind/care whether he whipped or not. Because, he had his own right to judge himself that he should be resting at least for a moment. He just ignored. he just sat there like he couldn't even feel the whipping at his body. He just gives up.

And as John Thornton watches this since Hal is not controlling himself from beating Buck he saves Buck's life and becomes his new master.

  9. Every single dog on the sled team were very tired the could barely even stand upon their 4 paws. It was because of Hal, CHarles and Mercedes they were all very unexperienced, and dint know how to even treat dogs or at least feed them properly. After the long journey they reach John Thorntons camp. When they reached, the dogs were so exhausted, Hal tried whipping the dogs to make a move, but Buck dint care one bit i think that he was also very used to the pain. So Buck and the other dogs dint care at all, because they all wanted and needed a lot of rest.

After John Thornton was watching all this chaos, he decide to take Buck for himself as his rightful owner.

  10. The reason Buck didn't give in to Hal's whipping is probably the fact that he was too exhausted to even move and that he thought that it wasn't worth giving in to. Although the rest of the sled team were extremely tired as well, they weren't as used to the pain as Buck was, which is why they gave in and he didn't.

  11. In my opinion, I feel that Buck didn't give in because he was way too tired and overall, he was already used the the pain. All of the other dogs were also extremely tired and didn't want to get up and move. Buck was used to the pain and the other dogs were not.
This is why Buck wouldn't give in but the other dogs would.
